Out of the three starting characters, Nilan is the one with the largest Will by default. So, just like with his ranged attacks, placing a couple of points into Will for Nolan can be very handy during battles as it gives him a secondary attack type.

Sheda’s starting build is geared toward hand-to-hand combat. By default, she has a few points invested in the Endurance Attribute. Since she fights up close, she gets hit more often. So, by increasing the effectiveness of her armor, you can mitigate some of the damage she’d normally take.
Having at least one tanky character can be very handy during tough battles.Once one of your party members goes down in a battle, it is easy to get completely overrun. This will result in your entire party getting wiped out. If you have someone who can soak up damage, your chances of survival greatly increase.
