Summary

WithGod of War’s Norse saga now officially over afterGod of War Ragnarokand its accompanying Valhalla DLC, it’s unclear where the series will go next. Some rumors have suggested the next games could focus more on Atreus than Kratos, as he departs from his father at the end ofGod of War Ragnarokin pursuit of his own goals. However, the notion remains that Kratos' story isn’t over yet, despite his personal journey of growth finally concludingGod of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC. Wherever the series goes from here, it will likely begin a brand-new saga for the father and son, possibly even taking players somewhere they have never been inGod of War.

Currently, it’s unclear where thenextGod of Warsagamight take Kratos and Atreus. While the story and setting have occupied fans' minds more than anything else, perhaps something more unique worth considering is what a literal shift in perspective could do for the next story. Both the originalGod of Warseries and the reboot have been played in third-person, with the only differences between the two being a fixed camera for the former and a free camera for the latter. In light of that, aGod of Wargame or saga playable from a first-person perspective would shake things up a bit in terms of gameplay and narrative.

God of War’s Next Saga Could Make a First-Person Perspective Work

Other Third-Person Games Have Recently Been Given the First-Person Treatment

AGod of Wargame playable from the first-person perspective might sound strange, considering the series has been in third-person since its 2005 origins. If it were to take the plunge into first-person, it wouldn’t be the first third-person game to do so, and that includes more recent franchises. For example,Assassin’s Creed, which has been around since 2007, received a first-person game fairly recently in the VR gameAssassin’s Creed Nexus, which launched in November 2023. Overwhelming skepticism about afirst-personAssassin’s Creedgamebeing halfway decent attempted to halt its way forward, but the game wound up exceeding expectations, despite garnering a mediocre reception in the end.

Horizon Call of the Mountainis another recent attempt at realizing a third-person franchise as a first-person VR game, and the same skepticism that followedAssassin’s Creed Nexusalso followed it. However,Horizon Call of the Mountainexceeded expectationsjust asAssassin’s Creed Nexusdid, and even achieved similar scores across the board. While bothHorizon Call of the MountainandAssassin’s Creed Nexusare VR games, an argument remains that third-person franchises can work as first-person games, and that includesGod of War.

God of War Played in First-Person Would Change the Gameplay and Narrative

It might not make much sense forGod of Warto shift to a first-person perspective in the next saga when the franchise has been in third-person for nearly two decades now. That being said, the nextGod of Warsaga being in first-person rather than third-person could give it a degree of immersion the former sagas have lacked while simultaneously allowing it to tell its story in a much different way. TheGod of WarNorse saga hasn’t lacked immersion on all accounts, as it’s rather easy to get engulfed inKratos and Atreus' internal and external journey. All the same, shifting things to a first-person perspective would essentially place players directly in the shoes of each game’s protagonist, allowing them to experience that journey firsthand rather than vicariously.

Kratos and Atreus must choose between their own safety and the safety of the realms.

, a first-person perspective could even justify any changes in the setting or gameplay, especially if they are drastic. With both the Norse and Greek sagas now concluded, the changes would need to be drastic anyway, so perhaps a bold perspective change is in order. Then again, a first-personGod of Wargame might be too tall an order.
