Summary
A new mod for the PC version ofGod of War Ragnarokcompletely bypasses the game’s PSN requirement, a controversial feature that many fans have protested against.God of War Ragnarokis the latest first-party PlayStation title to make its way to PC after receiving a Steam release on September 19, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Santa Monica Studios' critically acclaimed sequel.
After PlayStation announced back in May that the 2022God of Wargamewould be coming to PC, fans were quick to blast the studio overRagnarok’s forced PSN account-linking requirement. The feature, which has been seen in previous PC ports likeGhost of Tsushima,is controversial for a magnitude of different reasons. Not only is PSN unavailable in many regions, making titles likeGod of War RagnarokandGhost of Tsushimacompletely unobtainable on Steam, but users also have privacy concerns after Sony experienced multiple data breaches in the past.
While the game’s Steam rating has since climbed to “mostly positive,“God of WarRagnarokreceived mixed reviewswhen it launched earlier this month, with many citing the forced PSN requirement as the main issue. But thanks to a new mod known as NoPSSDK, which is available to download onNexusModsand was spotted byPCGamer, users can now refuse the game’s request to link the player’s Steam and PlayStation account. Without the mod, there simply isn’t a choice in the matter, but users can now select “no” and continue to play offline.
God of War Ragnarok Mod Removes PSN Requirement
According to the mod’s official description, it is a “tiny library” that completely strips the PlayStation PC SDK runtime requirement fromGod of War Ragnarok. Its creator notes that the mod does not touch or modify any of the game code and simply adds a new .dll file to the title. After users install theGod of War Ragnarokmodfor the first time, they will be greeted with a message that asks them if they wish to connect their Steam account with their PlayStation Network account, but simply selecting “no” will allow players to play with no further issues.
Although PCGamer reports the mod working without issue for them, there do appear to be some users struggling to get it to work. The mod’s creator urges players to delete a specific file (which can be found in the official description on NexusMods) if they are encountering issues, but it is worth noting that modifying any game, includingGod of War Ragnarok, can cause multiple issues and should be done at the user’s own risk.
After PlayStation caused outrage withHelldivers 2’s forced PSN requirementearlier this year, the feature has become a hot topic with any future PlayStation PC release. While the studio did walk back the requirement forHelldivers 2due to massive backlash, later titles, such asGhost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarok, and upcoming releasesUntil DawnandLEGO Horizon Adventures, all require users to link their Steam account with a PSN account to play the game.
