Summary
Ghost of Tsushimastars Jin Sakai, a samurai who must juggle tradition and innovation to deal with the Mongol invasion. His story is an epic one that leaves players with a lot of food for thought while providing an irresistible combat system. After the success of the game, all eyes are on Sucker Punch to follow up with an equally impressive sequel.
There are a few directions the studio could go with aGhost of Tsushimasequel. The obvious route would be to continue Jin’s story and provide players with more of the same. After all, if it isn’t broken, Sucker Punch doesn’t really need to fix it. If the studio chooses to be a bit more daring, however, it could try something new and explore a different time period. Both options come with their benefits and risks.
Why It May be a Good Idea for Ghost of Tsushima 2 to Play it Safe
Ghost of Tsushimagot a lot of things right. Its combat system is one of the most exciting to come fromSony’s roster of first-party exclusive games. Players switch between different stances to deal with various types of enemies. For players who prefer strategizing and striking from the shadows, it’s possible to go the stealth route and attack unseen. Either option has its advantages and disadvantages, and if players like, they can blend both play styles.
The game also strikes gold when it comes to its plot. Players watch as Jin turns away from the samurai code of honor to become the ‘ghost’ of Tsushima, striking fear into the Mongols, who are unsure when the mythical man will attack. Although the inhabitants of Tsushima Island are glad to have a savior, not everyone agrees with Jin’s new methods, including his uncle,Lord Shimura. The conflict between the two is not settled easily.
Ghost of Tsushima 2could focus on Jin yet again, allowing characters that players have familiarized themselves with to develop further. Players would also discover what the canon ending is, asGhost of Tsushimaends with players either sparing Lord Shimura or killing him. Perhaps more importantly, such a sequel would retain the prior game’s amazing combat system, which gives players a chance to carry over the skills they’ve acquired to the next game.
The Downsides to Providing More of the Same with a Ghost of Tsushima Sequel
Though Sucker Punch could afford to offer more of the same, it may not be the wisest idea.Ghost of Tsushimais an expansive open-world game, and while the combat system is engaging, it can get boring after hours of tearing through Mongols. By the time a sequel rolls around, players may have gotten tired of the combat and overall gameplay. This problem extends to the game’s exploration. There are only so many fox dens to find and golden birds to follow before it gets stale.
Why it May be Smart for a Ghost of Tsushima Sequel to Switch Things Up
An alternative path for a sequel to take is to provide players with a drastically different experience. This could be done by exploring a different time period, perhaps exploring another event inTsushima Island’s history. This approach opens the door for new stories, characters, and combat systems. This idea could work, as it’ll provide something fresh for returning players.
Some dangers come with trying something new withGhost of Tsushima 2. Most notably, it could alienate players who have grown attached toJin Sakaiand his friends and want to see what happens to them. If Sucker Punch goes this route, the studio has to be careful not to change too much, or else it could lose the essence of what made the original game so successful.
Sucker Punch has yet to announce aGhost of Tsushimasequel though, with a film and aSecret Levelepisode on the way, it’s hard to imagine that the studio is prepared to abandon the franchise just yet. Fans will have to wait patiently to hear more from the studio. However, if the sequel is anything like the original game, it’ll be worth it to be patient and allow the developers to work their magic.
