Here players will get to play as a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they witness the horrors of the Locust’s invasion on Sera’s surface. While The Coalition has confirmed thatGears of War: E-Dayis the next mainline entry in the series, they also confirmed that they haven’t forgotten aboutGears 5’s plot and cliffhanger and will continue that story in the future. With these plans forGears 5’s inevitable sequel, The Coalition could tease potential plotlines forGears of War 6inE-Day.
Gears 5’s Plot and Cliffhanger Explained
The following contains spoilers forGears 5.
Taking place a few months after the rise of the Swarm and about 42 years after Emergence Day,Gears 5continues to follow J.D. Fenix, Del Walker, and Kait Diazas the three struggle to fend off the Swarm threat. More and more humans are kidnapped to fill the Swarm’s ranks as more Locust troops and hollow creatures emerge from their crystalline cocoons. As the remaining COG forces attempt to reactivate the Hammer of Dawn satellites, the Swarm begins to utilize flying Leeches to control DeeBee robots, further limiting the COG’s countermeasures.
The core ofGears 5centers around Diaz as she attempts to learn about her connection to the Locust Horde and why the Swarm kidnapped her mother, Reyna Diaz. Marcus Fenix sends Diaz and Walker to the Mount Kadar Laboratory, where the two discover the Locusts’ origin as COG experiments, cut off Diaz’s connection to the Swarm’s hivemind, and unintentionally allow Queen Myrrah’s consciousness to possess Reyna’s body. During a battle at Old Ephyra, Myrrah in Reyna’s now mutated bodyconfronts Diaz and kills either Del or J.D., depending on the player’s choice. A gigantic burrowing creature known as the Kraken is killed during the battle, but the COG is unable to eliminate Myrrah.
Gears 5, the last mainlineGears of Wargame released so far, officially turned five years old on Friday, September 6th, 2024.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Potential Connection to Gears 6
WhileGears of War: E-Dayis set about 42 years before the events ofGears 5, there are still ways the prequel could tease events for the eventualGears of War 6. The Coalition has additionally confirmed thatE-Daywon’t be restricted to Emergence Day itselfand may feature events that happen weeks and possibly months after the initial invasion event. Based on this expanded timeline,E-Daycould feature more events and characters that could appear or connect to the story ofGears of War 6. One potential character who could appear inE-Dayand set up events forGears of War 6is Dr. Torres, Kait’s grandfather.
Dr. Torres was one of the scientists at the Mount Kadar Laboratory who discovered that Myrrah was immune to Imulsion. Myrrah’s genetics would be used to mutate children who would later become the Sires and lead to the first generation of Locusts. Amid the testing, Torres and Myrrah developed a romantic relationship which resulted in the birth of Reyna. Torres eventually escaped the facility with Reyna, inadvertently causing Myrrah to lead the Locust in rebellion which would culminate in the Locust War. One year after Emergence Day, Torres was found by the Locust scientist Ukkon and killed, while Reyna was rescued by her future husbandGabriel Diaz inGears Tactics.
How Gears of War: E-Day Could Tease Gears of War 6
Marcus and Dom could potentially encounter Torres and a young Reyna inE-Day,since they were constantly on the run ever since they left Mount Kadar. Given how Torres and Reyna were found in an abandoned UIR lab inGears Tactics, they may have hidden in other abandoned labs before, with Torres working on a potential way to end the Locust threat for good. Marcus and Dom could briefly encounter Torres and Reyna but lose each other after an altercation with the Locust.Gears of War: E-Daycould then end with a potential post-credit scene of a device or vial laying dormant in a lab as an older Marcus and Kait Diaz enter, showcasing howthe Swarm War may soon come to an end.
