Frostpunk 2lets players return to New London as the Captain’s successor — the Steward. In the sequel to 2018’sFrostpunk, players are tasked with managing the wants and ideas of several competing Factions, each of which are represented on the City Council. To succeed in building a future for New London, players need to prevent Unrest and Tension from building, as this results in riots, protests, civil war, and eventually a game over. To do this, players must use the Deradicalization mechanic.

Deradicalization refers to the process by which a Faction’s Fervor is reduced, decreasing their size and their propensity for disruptive actions in the city. Deradicalization and Fervor are key mechanics for players to understand, although the game does little to explain them. Keep reading to learn about both, including the fastest and best ways to decrease Fervor in a Faction.

What Does Deradicalizing Factions Do In Frostpunk 2?

InFrostpunk 2, one of the major threats to the Stewart’s progress is being ousted as leader. The chances of this happening are represented by the overall trust, determined by relations with each active Faction. When a faction feels ignored or becomes too unhappy, they can gain something calledFervor. Thisraises the threat of riots, protests, and civil war— a game-ending threat.

Deradicalizing a Faction is the process of reducing a Faction’s Fervor, as well as possibly its size. This can lead to a smaller presence on the Council and reduced Tension in the city.Deradicalization is the players' major defense against unrest.

Where To See A Faction’s Current Fervor

A Faction’s current Fervor appears on theirdetails card just under the name of the Faction. To open the details card, select the Faction’s portrait from the bottom of the screen while viewing the city. The line of text in question should list the current opinion the faction has of the Steward, along with their Fervor Score out of a possible three (next to the diamond-shaped fist icon).

The ideal Fervor for each faction is “none,” as this will prevent them from Protesting or Rioting, both of which can damage districts and reduce efficiency.

Best Ways To Reduce Fervor Quickly In Frostpunk 2

As stated, some methods of reducing Fervor work better than others. The best method will somewhat depend on what consequences the player is equipped to handle, so it is helpful to know the cost of each Fervor Reduction Method up front as well as how big the return is. Overall,Prisons are often the best way to reduce Fervor when they are available, as the Prisoner Faction rarely clashes with the interest of other Factions in the City. As a bonus, prisoners can be employed as guards to further quell unrest, andRound Ups are the largest immediate Fervor Reductionavailable in the game.

The prison type with the least negative impact on your city areIsolation Prisons, which are supported by the New Londoners and Stalwarts. These prisons only slightly reduce Trust when used, while the alternative, Punitive Prisons, increase Tension at a constant rate.

Fervor Reduction

Deradicalize via the Parent Faction

Requires the parent Faction’s relations to be Favorable or higher and will result in a reduction in relations with that parent faction, the one being Deradicalized, and the Deradicalized Faction losing some members.

One full level

Imprisonment

It requires enoughWorkforceto employ sufficient guards, and it creates a new Faction, “Prisoners,” with their own needs and goals.

Largest Reduction

Improving Relations

Requires signing lawns or doing research that may be against the player’s interests. Alternatively, spend Heatstamps to fund projects (although this is expensive).

Small Reduction, continuous over time

When Prisons Aren’t Available - Prevention

When Prisons are not available, it is advised to use Project Funding and Promises to prevent relationship degradation, as this will prevent Fervor from reaching dangerous levels. The Deradicalize ability is a good last defense, due to it not costing Materials and having a significant return. However, the hit in Relations the player takes with the Parent Faction can quickly result in the City circling the drain, so it shouldn’t be used often.
