Summary

A former Rockstar Games developer has weighed in on the discussion surrounding a potential delay for the upcomingGrand Theft Auto 6, claiming that fans shouldn’t rule out the possibility yet. AlthoughGTA 6is officially confirmed to release in fall 2025, there has been a fair bit of trepidation around the long-awaited open-world title lately due to recent rumors claiming a delay to 2026.

Worrisome discourse ran rampant across theGTA 6fanbase this past week when a GTA Base staffer claimed that they’d heard from “multiple devs” at Rockstar Games aboutGTA 6supposedly being pushed to “early to mid 2026.” The information incited both concern and skepticism, as it was rather contradictory to messaging from Rockstar and Take-Two themselves that showedconfidence inGTA 6hitting its stipulated fall 2025 release window. Thankfully, this rumor was debunked not long after it started making the rounds.

Credible industry insider Jason Schreierplacated worries about the potentialGTA 6delay, stating that he hadn’t heard of any such thing from six Rockstar developers. However, Schreier did note that sinceGTA 6is a huge, ambitious game, it could still slip from its fall 2025 release target. Now, former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij has echoed this notion with a relevant example in a recent tweet. Vermeij said that Rockstar’s decision to delayGTA 4was made around four months before the game was supposed to launch in 2007, and that it gets “hard to make the call” beyond that.

GTA 6’s Release Date May Not Be Fully Confirmed Until Next Summer

Drawing a parallel between then and now, Vermeij reckoned that sinceGTA 6has another year of development left, even Rockstar may not be in a position to determine whether it can hit that target until “May-ish” of 2025. Therefore, fans shouldn’t be too confident about the fall 2025 release window just yet. Vermeij capped off the tweet by asserting thatGTA 6is sure to be a hit regardless of when it releases, and that Rockstar and Take-Two will only release the game when they’re “100% happy with it.” The reasoning is sound, and is yet another reminder that although not confirmed, a delay is always likely with a game this big.

The anticipation aroundGTA 6is some of, if not the highest for any game in history, so it’s understandable why small rumors often turn into big points of speculation among fans. Despite assurances from Rockstar and Take-Two, the possibility of a delay should definitely not be discounted, but for now,GTA 6seems to be on track to hit its fall 2025 release target. Hopefully, thesecond trailer forGTA 6will narrow that vague release window down further, but predicting when the trailer itself will drop is an entirely separate ballgame.
