Flint: Treasure of Oblivionis a tactical, pirate-themed RPG that puts players in the role of Captain James Flint, a pirate searching for a mysterious treasure. It is a quest that players cannot venture on alone, and players will need the help of first mate Billy Bones and a buccaneer pirate crew to succeed. While selecting and developing a team is typical in mosttactical RPGs, it is essential inFlint: Treasure of Oblivion. While influenced by strategy games likeXCOMandFinal Fantasy Tacticson a systemic level,Flint: Treasure of Oblivionalso seeks to present a realistic take on the traditional pirate fantasy and place its mark on the pirate universe.
With combat and crew management, players can not only choose unique abilities for their crew and improve their skills but also advance their crews in intriguing and perhaps unexpected ways. In an interview with Game Rant, Savage Level CEO and President Maxime Josse spoke more about the types of crewmates that players can recruit inFlint: Treasure of Oblivion. Josse also explained more about the importance of crew specialties and what role these play in turn-based combat.
Flint: Treasure Of Oblivion Has 13 Different Crewmate Roles And Includes Famous Female Pirates
Josse revealed there are 13 different positions that players can obtain for their pirate crew, including the master craftsman, lookout, and master gunner, which seem like traditional roles on a pirate ship. Josse also explained how each crewmate’s expertise relates toFlint: Treasure of Oblivion’sRPG combat system, which combines chance and strategy with a mixture of cards and dice:
“Each sailor will have a level of expertise in their role, represented by a die: the more experienced the sailor, the higher the number of faces. Each position has its own skills and can also develop in its attributes and characteristics.”
Not all RPGs necessarily include apirate classthat often, so the choice of 13 different crew positions could well appeal to fans of pirates who want to see a more realistic presentation of a pirate’s life and the various roles in a crew. In addition,Flint: Treasure of Oblivionseems like an inclusive game for female representation, as players can also recruit famous female pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy, like Mary Read and Anne Bonny.
Josse said this was also important to the studio, with some female pirates often being a lesser-known part of pirate history, like Cheng Shih.
Flint: Treasure Of Oblivion’s Crew Advancement And Turn-Based Combat
Flint: Treasure of Oblivion’s crew progression system also looks set to reflect its approach to recreating real-life pirate history as much as possible while still making a video game. For instance, Josse explained that rules and codes were a big part of a pirate’s life, which seems to come into play in the game’s crew advancement andturn-based combat.
“It won’t be the number of men you kill in battle that advances the crew, but the gold you find during your explorations and choose to share equally among the pirates. However, the real secret lies in the ‘combo’ between certain characters, who, when placed side by side on the field, provide a significant advantage.”
On top of all this,Flint: Treasure of Oblivionalso integrates comic-book-style narration and draws influences from the literary classicTreasure Islandfor its characterization of Captain Flint and Billy Bones. Altogether, these features could potentially help Flint: Treasure of Oblivionbecome a unique addition to the sea ofpirate gamesavailable. It also shows there could still be plenty of room to plunder the enduring and popular pirate life fantasy in new or different ways.
Flint: Treasure of Oblivionis due for release on July 25, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
