Summary
Star Warsmight be in a bit of a pickle with some viewers after the cancellation ofThe Acolyte, but one fan-favorite star is still ready and willing to come back for another adventure that might be a bit more well-received than another iteration of the now-canned series.
While theStar Warsfranchise has largely been a theatrical affair in the past, the more recent shift to TV shows on Disney+ has seen a lot of unique and interesting projects. One of the more prominent examples was the miniseriesObi-Wan Kenobi, which took fans back to the titular character’s years in isolation on Tatooine as Ben Kenobi for a never-before-seen adventure. Fans would, unfortunately, receivea discouragingObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 update from Joel Edgertonamidst no word from the franchise that any more episodes of the series would be made, effectively putting a freeze on what was a lot of building anticipation.
In an interview withVariety, which briefly touched on howAlec Guiness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi affected his own renditionof the character’s younger self, McGregor admitted that he was still interested in doing another project as Obi-Wan and gave a fairly compelling reason why this could happen. “I really do hope we get a chance to do another one,” McGregor said. “Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”
McGregor also explained how his love for his predecessor still affects his approach in the present. “I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness’ work because I was playing him as a young man,” he says. “Even now with the series, that’s my personal challenge — if a take feels a bit like him, I’m happy.” While he’s been transparent about not being aware of any plans in the works at Lucasfilm,McGregor has been confident about getting a secondObi-Wan Kenobiseasonin previous statements, and it’s clear he feels very strongly about it. His latest input sounds less assured and more hopeful, likely indicating that there’s been no change since the last time he spoke on the situation.
While there was little enough interest in what Kenobi was up to during his isolation in the desert,Obi-wan Kenobihas gotten a lot of people thinking about just how much time that really was and what sort of things could have occurred. It might not have been the case prior, but McGregor’s point about having more to explore is far more likely now. Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker alongside McGregor in all threeStar Warsprequel films andObi-Wan Kenobi, was also noted as supporting the idea.“If it means that I got to do more with Ewan, then that’s a no-brainer, but I really hope that he continues with the character,” Christensen says. “Just as a fan, it’s so exciting to get to watch him play Obi-Wan — he’s just so good at it.” Christensen’s comments are certain to resonate with many fans, and McGregor certainly seems to know that. One sign of this isMcGregor giving confirmation that he’s currently not interested in joining Marvel Studios' MCU, mostly due to his satisfaction with his role inStar Wars.
Unfortunately, the recent cancellation ofThe Acolytemight not bode wellfor Kenobi or any other shows that might have taken a more unique approach to the franchise’s lore and characters. While Disney did officially cancel it, there were no further details given that could indicate how that show’s failure will affect plans for the franchise going forward. With other fan favorites likeAhsokaalso still waiting in the wings, fans might have to brace for a return to the big screen with little focus on smaller projects like a second season ofObi-Wan Kenobi.
