Summary
Released right at the height of the golden age of real-time strategy games,Age of Mythologytook its predecessors' groundbreaking formula and combined it with an incredibly unique premise.Age of Mythologystill holds up remarkably well today, but as should be expected of anygame from 2002, some elements don’t hold up quite so well. Thankfully, that’s whereAge of Mythology: Retoldcomes in.
Released just a week ago,Age of Mythology: Retoldis a full, ground-up remake of the 2002 game that’s been developed by World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires, two studios that have worked on theAge of Empiresfranchise for years now. These studios have taken their expertise and applied it toAge of Mythology, delivering a great remake that boasts a vast array of noticeable changes and improvements, all while retaining the essence of the original game.
All the Major Changes and Improvements in Age of Mythology: Retold
Improved Visuals
The most obvious improvement made in the remake isAge of Mythology: Retold’s all-new graphics, animations, models, and lighting. When looking at the 2002 original and the remake side-by-side, the graphics are night and day, withRetoldadding countless visual elements to ensure that the game looks and feels like a modern-day, big-budget strategy title.
Higher Population Cap
Delving into the gameplay changes made in the remake,Age of Mythology: Retoldfeatures a much higher population cap than its 2002 counterpart. Inthe original version ofAge of Mythology, players could only build 10 houses, limiting their population to just 100 units. InAge of Mythology: Retold, players can build 16 houses, raising that initial population cap to 160 units, which allows for larger armies as well as a larger economic workforce.
God Powers Can Be Reused
InAge of Mythology, players are granted special God Powers every time they advance a technological age and recruit a Minor God to their civilization. Each of these God Powers could only be used once in the original version of the game. InAge of Mythology: Retold, players canreuse God Powers, they simply need to wait for the cooldown timer and spend the large amount of Favor that’s needed to use them again.
The New Wonder Age
The originalAge of Mythologyfeatured four technological Ages: Archaic, Classical, Heroic, and Mythic.Age of Mythology: Retoldadds a new Wonder Age to the game. Ushered in after the completion of the eponymous game-winning structure, the Wonder Age gives players +1 Favor every second, reduces the cost and cooldown of God Powers, increases the attack power, health, and speed ofTitans and Myth units, and allows the Titan Gate to be rebuilt after 10 minutes.
Age of Mythology: Retold’s Wonder Age replaces the Titan Age that was introduced in the original game’s first expansion.
Controller Support
Released on PC and Xbox simultaneously,Age of Mythology: Retoldnaturally needed much more controller support than its 2002 counterpart. Thankfully, developers World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires went above and beyond in this area, takingAge of Empires 4’s intuitive control schemeand giving it a few additional refinements along the way, such as improved icon visibility and clearer UI font for its radial menus. This streamlined control scheme ensures Xbox players are still getting the fullAge of Mythology: Retoldexperience.
