Donald Glover offered a new update on his plans for the LandoStar Warsmovie, revealing that he hopes it brings back an element he thinks was missing from the Skywalker saga.

TheStar WarsSkywalker saga concluded in 2019 withThe Rise of Skywalker, a billion-dollar blockbuster that was poorly received by most fans. Since the film’s release, Lucasfilm and Disney have struggled to get a newStar Warsmovie off the ground, with high-profile projects likeKevin Feige’sStar Warsmovie being canceledor remaining in development for several years. One of those developing projects is Glover’s Lando Calrissian movie, which he’s co-writing with his brother, Stephen Glover. The Lando movie was initially announced as a Disney Plus series before being redeveloped as a feature film.

During an interview with theWall Street Journal, Donald Glover revealed what he wants to bring toStar Warsas Lando Calrissian. “I just want it to be fun, like, as a Star Wars fan myself, I think it’s important that there just needs to be more fun being had,” Donald Glover said. “It’s very hard to have fun right now.” Donald Glover acknowledged that it can be difficult to have fun considering the serious state of the world, but he believes having fun is necessary:

It’s tough because there are very serious things happening, and those are the only things that connect us, weirdly, so I get why things are serious, but, part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have enjoyment. And I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.

Donald Glover expanded on this subject, saying the overly serious state of the world applied totheStar WarsSkywalker saga. “Star Wars,’ I love it, but sometimes it be super serious. Sometimes it be, like, way too serious,” Donald Glover said. “It’s like everything that has to do with the Skywalkers, is like so serious.” Donald Glover reiterated his desire to bring fun back toStar Wars, explaining why Lando may be the ideal character to do so:

Lando, I think the best part about him is he’s a scoundrel, you know, and I feel like people can relate to that. And he’s probably like, ‘Man, this war is wack. I need money,’ which I feel everyone can relate to. So, I want to just bring fun to ‘Star Wars’. I just want it to be fun.

Donald Glover’s comments on theStar Warssaga may ring true for some fans. WhileStar Wars: The Force AwakensandThe Last Jedihas its fair share of fans and detractors,The Rise of Skywalkerwas nearly universally panned. Most criticism towardThe Rise of Skywalkerlargely focused on questionable creative decisions, such asbringing back Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatineor wasting the storyline potential established byThe Force AwakensandThe Last Jedi. However, it could be argued that theStar Warsfranchise also took its mythology too seriously and forgot to entertain audiences.

WhileThe Empire Strike BackandRevenge of the Sithare undoubtedly darker entries in theStar Warsfranchise, the originalStar Warsfilm was a relatively simple and entertaining popcorn film. Perhaps Donald Glover’s Lando movie can bring the franchise back to basics and deliver a funStar Warsfilm that renews faith in the troubled space saga.

TheStar Warssaga is available on Disney Plus.
