However, it has been confirmed that the story will pick up immediately after the events of the limited series,Dexter: New Blood.Fans are speculating about what exactly the story will be centered around, and how Dexter will return to his killing ways.
Thre is one possibility that could work quite well toactually save theDexterfranchiseand keep it going strong for years to come.It involves Dexter being pardoned for his crimes in order to help the FBI track down serial killers who don’t follow codes. It is expected thatDexter: Resurrectionwill run for multiple seasons, so the new series needs a hook that’ll keep it running indefinitely. Dexter can’t go to jail or face the death penalty (yet) as there would be no show.

For years,Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) was always one step ahead of Miami Metro Homicide detectives in the hunt for serial killers. He knew what signs to look for, as he was also a serial killer, albeit one withHarry’s codeof ethics. Dexter was in a rather precarious position at the end ofNew Blood, as Chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) had exposed his big secret, and he was left for dead after being shot by Harrison. However,Dexter is actually alive inDexter: Resurrection, so surely he now has to face up to his crimes. Well, not exactly, as Michael C. Hall revealed in aninterview with Varietythat the follow-up series will potentially run for multiple seasons.
Dexter: Resurrection Key Facts
Nobody wants to see a Dexter prison drama, so there has to be an alternative. Sure, Dexter could go on the run, but how long would that last?A better idea would be for the FBI to realize the potential for Dexter’s crime fighting skills and ask him to assist them in their investigations. In real life, serial killers have been helping law enforcement solve crimes for years. FBI criminal profiler, John Douglas coined the term ‘serial killer’ and spent years traveling around maximum security prisons questioning America’s worst serial killers. Douglas was trying to discover what made these killers tick and how they carried out their attacks, in order to help him build a profile of the offenders he was trying to track down.
Douglas' book on the subject was adapted into the Netflix series,Mindhunter, which ran for two seasons on the streamer between 2017-2019.That’s not to say that Dexter should be a carbon copy ofMindhunter, but the basic premise could be similar. Dexter helps the FBI track down other serial killers. However, it would work better if he did it while still being a free man, so he can also indulge in his killer habits on the side, albeit without the knowledge of the FBI.
Dexter Will Probably Have To Face Up To His Crimes At Some Point
Everybody is going to know Dexter’s secret when the story resumes inDexter: Resurrection, andthere will come a point where Dexter probably does need to pay for his crimes. However, Paramount’s merger with Showtime suggests the Dexter-verse has a lot more stories to tell before this happens.Dexter: Resurrection’s key dynamic changecan only last for so long, before the fans will want some resolution to Dexter’s arc.If Dexter can somehow redeem himself for some of the unjust kills he committed, he could receive a happier ending, and that would probably please a lot of fans, with theprevious twoDexterfinalesfailing to stick the landing.
The Future Of The Dexter-verse
New Bloodwas supposed to be the definitive ending to Dexter’s story, and showrunner, Clyde Phillips even confirmed that was the intention beforethe majorDexterretcon, in aninterview with Deadlineback in 2022.
I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale ofDexter.Dexter is dead.
It clearly didn’t work to kill Dexter inNew Blood, but it also didn’t work to let him get away with everything and faking his own death in the original ending back in 2013, so it might work to land somewhere in the middle forDexter: Resurrection’s eventual ending. After working with the FBI, Dexter could face some jail time, but avoid the death penalty in theiconic location of Miami. This way, there is a level of finality to the ending, with the possibility of a reboot in the future.
