Summary
Dexter: Original Sinwill air on Paramount + with Showtime in December 2025. The prequel series has a star-studded cast including Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The majority of the original cast of characters will be returning, and fans will see what they got up to in their early years at Miami Metro Homicide. However, the key recurring character of Tom Matthews hasn’t officially been cast yet, but an actor called Matthew William has just signed up for the prequel in an unspecified role, and he could quite possibly be playing Harry Morgan’s closest ally.
Matthew William does bear a striking resemblance to a younger looking Geoff Pierson, who played Tom Matthews in the originalDexterseries. It has been revealed that William will be playing a Miami Metro police officer, which does hint that he could be taking on the iconic role of the future chief. This is all speculation at the moment, but it would make perfect sense as fans have been eagerly awaiting the casting of thisone keyDextercharacter.
Tom Matthews Needs To Feature in Dexter: Original Sin As He Is Integral To Harry Morgan’s Backstory And He Might’ve Finally Been Cast
Most major characters from the originalDexterseries have been re-cast, butDexter: Original Sin doesn’t include James Doakesor Joey Quinn as they weren’t at Miami Metro in 1991, whenDexter: Original Sinis set, so their omission is understandable. However, the character of Tom Matthews, while not being a series regular, was a prominent figure in Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry’s backstory, and fans are becoming increasingly concerned that an actor hasn’t been cast to portray this character.
Matthew William has been cast inDexter: Original Sin, with rumors circulating that he could be playing the younger version of Matthews.Having said that, William will be a recurring character inDexter: Original Sin, so if he is playing Matthews, it won’t be as prominent of a role as fans would’ve hoped. It was suggested in the originalDexterseries, thatHarry Morganand Tom Matthews were close allies, and this needs to be explored in the prequel series. Matthews absolutely has to appear inDexter: Original Sin, and if he starts out as a recurring character in the debut season, there’s always a chance he could become a regular as the story progresses.
Who is Matthew William And What Else Has He Been In?
Matthew William is a 44-year-old actor with very few credits to his name thus far, but his career appears to be hotting up, with a number of projects on the horizon. The potentially biggest casting of his career is inDexter: Original Sin.As it stands, William has been cast as a ‘Miami Metro Police Officer’, but as the prequel series gets closer to airing, it might be revealed that this role is actually Tom Matthews, which would be a major role for the actor.

Dexter: Original Sinis more than halfway through its filming schedule, with initial location shooting taking place in Miami, before the production moved to Los Angeles. The plot of the first season is being kept under wraps, but Christian Slater did give some insight into what to expect from his character, Harry Morgan, in a recentinterview with Collider:
When I read these scripts, first of all, they were just so well written, and Clyde Phillips is amazing. He did the original show, and he’s managed to throw in some things here that really did catch me by surprise. There’s also things that Dexter doesn’t know that happened with Harry as a character, so those are the things that I’m really excited about and do give, I think, a greater insight into who this guy was.
Dexter fans got a nice surprise at San Diego Comic Con 2024, when a preview ofDexter: Original Sin’s title sequencewas shown, and it revealed thatMichael C. Hall would be providing the narrationfor the ‘inner voice of Dexter’. The actor then appeared on the panel brandishing donuts, in a nod to his famous character, and talked a bit more about his involvement in the prequel series. He’ll also serve as an executive producer on the show, and in addition to this, he will reprise the role of Dexter Morgan in the sequel series,Dexter: Resurrection, which will begin filming in January 2025.
