Summary
Bungie teases its plans forDestiny 2starting in 2025 with Codename Frontiers, the next phase of this live-service game, including two expansions, four free content updates, and plenty more. Following the well received Final Shape expansion, which put an end to the decade-long Light and Darkness storyline, things have not gone according to plan forDestiny 2. Bungie suffered through another major layoff, the game has been largely bleeding players, and there has been a general sense of worry regarding the game’s future.
Rumors indicated Bungie would be putting out smaller experiences, which would be focused more on activities that were highly replayable, instead of going for major expansions like The Final Shape. Even as fans wondered where the game was going beyond the current episodic content,Bungie began teasingDestiny 2players with an upcoming announcementregarding the future of the series. At the time, no date was given, however, Bungie has finally pulled the curtain back on Codename Frontiers, giving fans a glimpse into the future ofDestiny 2starting in the Summer of 2025.
After announcing a bigDestiny 2reveal for September 9, a new developer insight blog laid out the future of the series. Codename Frontiers represents the next phase ofDestiny 2, opening a new door taking players somewhere that Bungie calls weird and exciting. Two new expansions are planned, with the first codenamed Apollo, aiming to launch in Summer 2025, followed by Behemoth later in the Winter. Bungie warned that both of these expansions would be more medium-sized as larger experiences such as The Final Shape typically dominate development effort. Switching to two medium-sized expansions not only frees up resources, but also allows Bungie to explore new formats alongside.
What Is Planned for Destiny 2: Codename Frontiers in 2025?
Destiny 2game director Tyson Green elaborated further on Codename Frontiers, adding that the three episode structure is going to evolve into four major content updates that arrive every three months for all players. As expected, these will resemble seasons and episodes, bringing new activities, rewards, events, and other features. Within these changes forDestiny 2Codename: Frontiers, the major updates will represent a “substantial refresh” to help makeDestiny 2an easier game to recommend and remove some of the barriers.
In order to achieve that goal,Bungie is also planning changesto the core game, acknowledging thatDestiny 2is currently too complex and has hundreds of activities to jump into. To improve approachability, Bungie is planning to modernize the Director’s UI, making it quicker and easier to find activities to play. Activities will also allow players to customize the difficulty level, giving them a way to adjust how challenging something is and to earn rarer rewards like artifice armor for those who increase that level.
Finally, Bungie wrapped up the developer blog with a note on Codename: Apollo from the narrative director, Alison Lührs. While hinting that theupcomingDestiny 2Episodes Revenant and Heresywill tease the new franchise direction, Lührs offered some insight into the Summer expansion by saying Apollo is shaping up to be a nonlinear character-driven adventure. Unlike The Final Shape, which offered a straightforward start to finish style narrative, Apollo allows players to pick and choose the missions and activities they go on, no longer required to tackle them in a specific order. While the experience is being built in a way that makes sense from a story perspective,Destiny 2players won’t have to worry about time gating impacting the flow, as progression is based on the player’s journey, not the next update.
