It might not have elevated the MCU to new heights, butDeadpool and Wolverinewas a whole lot of fun. One ofthe biggest highlights ofDeadpool and Wolverine– and by far its most discussed element – was its wealth of cameos, ranging from celebrity guest stars to comic book deep-cuts to Fox-era Marvel icons. And whileMarvel’s Wolverineis sure to blaze its own trail, it’ll be hard for some fans not to compare Insomniac’s game to the recently released MCU movie.
Aside from its cinematic announcement trailer in 2021, there’s been no official news regardingMarvel’s Wolverine. It’s still unclear ifMarvel’s Wolverinewill be a strictly solo adventure or if any other X-Men are along for the ride, and that also means it’s not currently known ifWolverinewill feature any cameos from the rest of the Marvel universe. But regardless, there’s one cameo-riddenDeadpool and Wolverinesequence that Insomniac should use as a springboard for its alternate suits.
Deadpool and Wolverine Set a High Bar for Wolverine Cameos
Deadpool and Wolverine’s Variant Montage Was a Highlight
Kicking offDeadpool and Wolverine’s more action-fueled, fast-paced second act,the Wolverine variant montageremains a highlight of the R-rated MCU movie weeks after its release. After discovering he needs to find a Wolverine to replace his own universe’s deceased iteration, Wade Wilson begins hopping through the multiverse. This frantic journey brings him face to face with a slew of different Wolverine variants that are either used for comedic relief, or used to reference some classic comic book runs, or often both.
This montage sees Deadpool encounter anOld Man Loganvariant, a comic-accurate 5ft 3 Wolverine, Logan’s high-flying alter-ego Patch, a one-armed Wolverine ripped straight from theAge of Apocalypserun, a classic brown and yellow-suited Wolverine, a crucified Wolverine that references the striking cover ofUncanny X-Men #251, and most impressive of them all, a Wolverine variant that’s played byex-Superman, ex-Witcherstar Henry Cavill. The speed at which these cameos are delivered, the clear reverence for the source material, and the star power of Cavill make this montage a clear highlight ofDeadpool and Wolverine, and it could put quite a bit of pressure onMarvel’s Wolverine.
Marvel’s Wolverine Should Reference as Many Variants as Possible
While Spider-Man’s lengthy comic book history is often rightfully celebrated with movies likeInto the Spider-Verse,which brings together multiple variants of the hero, andInsomniac’sSpider-Manseries,which references different versions of Peter Parker and Miles Morales through alternate suits, Wolverine doesn’t often get the same treatment. For decades, the same version of Wolverine has remained at the focal point of pop-culture, and that’s part of the reason why theDeadpool and Wolverinevariant montage was so fun, as it introduced mainstream audiences to a variety of new versions of Logan.
Insomniac should keep this momentum going withMarvel’s Wolverine. As just mentioned,Marvel’s Spider-Manfrequently references multiversal versions of the Wall-Crawler via its alternate suits, so it would be great to seeMarvel’s Wolverinedo the same. Suits based onWolverine’s first comic book appearance, his appearance inDeadpool and Wolverine, his appearance in 2000’sX-Men, and his appearance inX-Men ‘97should all feature inMarvel’s Wolverineat the very least.
Marvel’s Wolverine
Marvel’s Wolverine is a third-person action game from Insomniac Games that is set in the same universe as the studio’s Spider-Man titles.
