Summary

SinceStar Warsis all about traveling through a massive galaxy, it is only natural that two of its biggest video games would give players ships to call home. InStar Wars Jedi, it comes in the form of Greez Dritus' Mantis, and inStar Wars Outlaws, players take the helm of the aptly named Trailblazer. Both ships look similar and seem to share a common purpose, yet the way the studios have chosen to implement them is a bit different.

BecauseStar Wars Outlawsis a different type of game thanStar Wars Jedi, it makes sense that both ships would have a few differences. One is an open-world adventure that seeks to give players the ability to explore some of their favorite locales while the other is going for a more Soulslike Metroidvania-type experience. So, each ship offers something unique, and some players may be debating about which one is better for years to come.

Star Wars Outlaws and Star Wars Jedi Approach Space in Different Ways

Star Wars Jedi’s Mantis Feels Fairly Limited

Players are introduced toStar Wars Jedi’s Mantispretty early on inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, as the crew rescues Cal Kestis from Bracca near the start of the game’s narrative. Then, they quickly form a bond with the crew and become a core member of it throughout the game. By the timeStar Wars Jedi: Survivorrolls around, Cal is actually the captain of the ship as he fights back against the Empire. And throughout it all, the ship itself remains relatively the same.

The ship itself is fairly simple, with it not offering much to the player. On each planet, it parks itself on a landing pad and players can enter or exit it on a whim. Usually, the crew members are standing outside it or sitting within waiting to engage in some type of conversation. Various collectibles, including plants, litter its interior and players can use the workbench ormeditation circle to gear up Cal. In flight, they can wander its cramped corridors before taking a seat when they near the planet, to cue the loading screen.

Star Wars Outlaws Trailblazer Actually Gives Players the Stars

Players get hold ofStar Wars Outlaws' Trailblazerafter Kay Vess steals it and then crashes it as she flees from Cantonica. It is on Toshara that she must work to repair it so that she can fly through the stars, making her mark on the galaxy. So, players must venture out to salvage various parts and eventually prepare the Trailblazer for flight. This not only helps them learn the various parts of the ship and game, but also goes a long way in making them feel far more connected to it.

Much like the Mantis, the Trailblazer serves as a base-of-operations of sorts, complete with its very own workbench and nice spacious rooms. The most notable difference is that, instead of taking a hands-off approach, players actually get to fly the Trailblazerduring their adventures. The bulk of the upgrades are focused purely on giving it stronger weaponry, which they will use to blast through enemies as they fly from planet to planet. Along with that, there is no crew until later, making the ship feel a bit lonelier.

Boththe Mantis and Trailblazerserve their purpose, and they do it well. They have similar looks, feels, and functionality, making it hard for some to pick a favorite. But, for those who prefer to actually fly their ship,Star Wars Outlawsmay be exactly what they are looking for. And for those that simply want to kick back and put their feet up, they will likely feel right at home withinStar Wars Jedi. Whatever they are looking for,Star Warsseems to have it.
