Now thatCivilization 7is finally on the horizon, longtime fans of the strategy franchise have an idea of what to expect from the game. The main premise of the series remains the same. Players are tasked with building an empire that withstands the test of time. However,Civilization 7is bringing some new mechanics to the upcoming title that put a fresh spin on the long-running strategy franchise.

In the past,Civilizationhas been a bit of a daunting franchise to get into. The intricacies of its gameplay and world-building can sometimes be hard to wrap one’s head around. Despite the steep learning curve of the past, it seems as thoughCivilization 7is aiming for a more approachable route. This is mainly in part due to the new Ages mechanic. Not only does the feature make the game potentially less daunting for newcomers, it could be a gold mine for multiplayer.

Making the Way For Shorter Playthroughs

The concept ofCiv 7’s Ages is simple. Players will get the chance to play through three ages; Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. At the end of each Age, an event will happen that sends a player’s empire in a bold new direction. While playing a specific Age, the Age Progression meter will fill, and when that has been done, an Age Transition is triggered. As players transition into a new Age, they will be able to select what attributes from the previous empire they would like their new civilization to have as the new Age begins.

What is particularly intriguing about this feature is that it seemingly makes shorter playthroughs more possible. With Ages, players can theoretically play through an Age and then stop. This is why the mechanic may be so monumental forCivilization 7’s multiplayer: it seems as though Ages aim to make the game feel more chapter-based. TheCivilizationfranchise can be notorious for hours-long playthroughs, and Ages presents a different option. Allowing a natural stopping point to take place within the game can make multiplayer far more welcoming to players who are not exactly in the mood for multi-hour ventures.
