While its predecessor is often considered one of the best city-building games around,Cities: Skylines 2had a rocky launchback in 2023. Just one month before the sequel was set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, Colossal Order confirmed that the console versions would be pushed back to Spring 2024. The developer would then go on to delay the console versions once again, with a new release window set for October 2024, as the studio cited optimization issues as the reason for the delay. Then, in July, Colossal said it would be unable to meet the October release window and did not provide a new date for its release.

Now, in anew poston the Paradox Forum, an update from Colossal Order states that theconsole versions ofCities: Skylines 2continue to be worked on and that there isn’t “any news beyond what we shared last time.” The developer also announced that two new creator packs, Modern Architecture and Urban Promenades, are completed but will not be released until Q4 of 2024. Colossal Order says the decision to delay the creator packs is to focus on the release of the asset editor and to ensure the team doesn’t “split [its] focus.”

Cities: Skylines 2 Developer Confirms Further Delays

With two creator packs being pushed back to Q4, Colossal Order also stated that thenextCities: Skylines 2DLC, known as the Bridges & Ports expansion, will also be delayed. Players can now expect the expansion to arrive in Q2 2025, as the team says it will continue to focus its efforts on the base game before shifting to paid content. Colossal says that support for custom assets for the upcoming editor and finalizing the console versions ofCities: Skylines 2are the studio’s top pritoties.

In terms ofpatch updates forCities: Skylines 2, Colossal says it’s also working on Detailer’s Patch #2. While the studio remained tight-lipped on the details of the update, it did note that it’s “looking at road-related decorations and a line tool for placing props and trees.” The post then noted that the patch will have a strong focus on features as opposed to new assets, so while the update will have a few new things for players to place, the studio said it “won’t rival the first installment when it comes to variety.”

As for bug fixes and feedback, Colossal says it received “a lot of great feedback” surrounding the difficulty of the game following the Economy 2.0 patch. Currently, changing the game’s options to lower the difficulty disables achievements, which the studio says “is not the most elegant solution” for those searching for more creative freedom. As such, Colossal is investigating a way to provide “both fun and challenging experiences” for all types of players.
