This article contains spoilers from Boruto and Naruto.
Summary
The Otsutsuki Clan was seen as a very strange additionto theNarutouniverse. This clan was properly introduced to the fans in the very last segment of Naruto, and many answers about this clan were provided to the fans later on, inBoruto. Of course, a lot about this clan is still under wraps, which means that asBorutocontinues, their lore is being explored as well.
However, now, it can safely be said that the Otsutsuki have established themselves as a powerful villain group, and, at the same time, fans know quite a bit about their past, their nature, and how they continue their line. Boruto’s creator, Mikio Ikemoto, recently got the chance to speak about the Otsutsuki, and he certainly had a lot of exciting things to say about them, and their showing in both the Naruto and the Boruto series.
How The Otsutsuki Clan Was Integrated Into Naruto
The Otsutsuki clan was introduced to the fans in the latter half of Naruto. In the Fourth Great
War, Naruto Uzumaki met the Sage Of Six Paths, Hagoromo. However, the Otsutsuki that fans saw first, that is, Hagoromo, was still detached from the clan itself. This is because Hagaromo was half human, as Kaguya had a child with a human on planet Earth, and ended up giving birth to him and his brother, Hamura. Up until this point, the lore was quite sensible.
I am the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki!
However, with the re-emergence of Kaguya Otsutsuki, things got a bit complicated. Essentially, it was revealed that Kaguya was a celestial being who came to Earth long ago and was the progenitor of chakra. At this point, fans had a whole new world of questions in their heads. Where exactly did Kaguya come from? Are there others like Kaguya out there? What exactly is the origin of the Otsutsuki? These were just a few questions that the fans had after Kaguya’s major reveal as Naruto’s biggest villain.
Eventually, Kaguya Otsutsuki was sealed again, but, it was clear for the fans to see that Kishimoto wanted to tinker withthe idea of the Otsutsukieven more. In The Last: Naruto the Movie, Toneri Otsutsuki was revealed as the main villain, and he was revealed to be a descendant of Hamura.
Continuing in a similar fashion, in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, which was also written by Kishimoto, Momoshiki and Kinshiki were revealed as the main villains, and once again, these celestial beings were seen to be hunting for chakra. In the Naruto series, the Otsutsuki clan was poorly explained, and this was expected, because they came out of nowhere at the very end, and essentially felt like half-baked plot points. In Boruto, this plot point might be uninteresting, but, at the very least, fans now know a lot about them, their history, where they come from, and what their goal is.
Ikemoto Explains How He Sees The Otsutsuki Clan Villains
The Otsutsuki Are Parasitic Aliens
In theBorutoseries, fans have gotten to see quite a lot about the Otsutsuki Clan in general. Recently, the author of Boruto, Mikio Ikemoto, had an opportunity to speak about Boruto and Naruto, in general, and he took this opportunity to answer a question about the Otsutsuki Clan. Upon being asked about the Otsutsuki, here’s what he had to say:
In Naruto, the origins of Otsutsuki were not explained. But, for me, they were aliens from the beginning. After the Great Shinobi Wars, we pushed the limits of the universe to find new antagonists. We did tests with other human characters, but the result was not convincing.
Essentially, Ikemoto mentioned that thethe Otsutsuki were always seen as Celestial Beings, even if their origin wasn’t explained in Naruto. For Boruto, there were likely many drafts about who the main villains would be.
Many ninjas were likely part of these drafts as well, but the results that they produced were not convincing enough, which is why they stuck with the parasitic aliens of the Otsutsuki Clan. This also makes sense in some ways, given that the shinobi villages were now united for the first time and there wouldn’t be any wars among them.
However, that certainly doesn’t mean that bad people would cease to exist. If Kishimoto and Ikemoto wanted, they could easily have introduced many powerful villains from within the world of ninja, and by doing that, they could have kept the ninja element of the story alive. Regardless, the Otsutsuki’s plotline, although uninteresting to many, is here to stay and fans will certainly see it being explored more in the future.
The Future Of The Otsutsuki In Boruto
The Otsutsuki Are Only Going To Get Stronger
So far, fans have seen quite a lot of the Otsutsuki ClaninBorutoalready. For instance, fans know that the Otsutsuki are alien parasites. They feed on the energy of a planet and their eventual goal is godhood. Essentially, every Otsutsuki travels with a partner, and they carry a seed of the Ten-Tails with them. They go to a planet and plant the Ten-Tails seed, which then grows to be a God Tree. The God tree bears fruit, which contains the life of the planet, and is essentially the chakra fruit. In order to grow this tree, the lower-ranking Otsutsuki from the pair is fed to the Ten-Tails. To prevent permanent death, the Otsutsuki who is eaten plants their own Karma on someone before being consumed and is then resurrected. Meanwhile, the chakra fruit can be consumed by the Otsutsuki, and they gain additional strength.
This is how Otsutsuki continue to strengthen themselvesover time and are essentially, in a way, immortal. In simple words, the Otsutsuki are planet devourers, which means there’s infinite potential for this clan to continue in Boruto. So far, fans have seen quite a lot of exciting Otsutsuki being introduced in the Boruto series, such as Momoshiki, Isshiki, and above all, Shibai. The latter is the future of the Otsutsuki in Boruto. This is because he is the only known Otsutsuki so far who has managed to advance to Godhood. He consumed so many chakra fruits that he left his body behind and ascended to a different plane of existence entirely. Perhaps, in the future, Shibai will be seen as a main villain, which would certainly be very exciting for the fans to see.
Now, there exist villainswho hold powers of Shibai, and it would certainly be incredibly exciting to see what they are capable of, how they will affect the plot, and how the Ninja World will be shaped because of their presence. That, along with much else, will be tackled in the future in theBorutoseries.
Boruto is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and theManga Plusapp. The release date for the next chapter of Boruto, Boruto Chapter 14, is set to be July 01, 2025.
