Shunsui Kyōraku
Ascension to Authority
Up until the events of theThousand-Year Blood War, Shunsui Kyōraku had gained much respect as the easygoing yet incredibly strong Captain of the 8th Division. Quiet and methodical in thought,Kyōraku rarely sought violenceunless absolutely necessary. This would be the war to see him thrust into command status far sooner than one could have thought.
That’s just the way it is Change is inevitable. Instead of resisting it, you’re better served simply going with the flow.” - Shunsui Kyoraku
In the aftermath of the debilitating losses during the war, including that of Yamamoto Genryūsai, Shunsui was appointed the new Head Captain of the Gotei 13. The mantle of leadership demanded a more somber and commanding bearing from him. Throughout the arc, Shunsui had to make hard decisions: the need to appoint a verycontroversial candidate as his lieutenantbeing one of them. The war not only whetted his tactical skills but also brought him face to face with his responsibilities, underlining the growth from an easy captain to a resolute leader who might lead Soul Society into its most trying hour.
Sajin Komamura
A Quest for Redemption
Sajin Komamura, Captain of the 7th Division, had long been tugged at by his loyalty and honor. A humanoid wolf, his appearance had always set him apart, but a sense of devotion to Soul Society never came into question. Following redemption from past wrongs, hoping to do his duty as captain, Komamura prepared forthe coming war aheadof theThousand-Year Blood War.
However, war imposed upon him the necessity of searching for strength beyond his body’s limitations. It was during the war that Komamura was to make one fateful decision: to transform into a being of colossal might by making one personal sacrifice in return. This transformation had been nailed by the lust for vengeance and justice that led to his deteriorated physical state towards the end of the war. Komamura representshow it tested side charactersto their limits and often made them sacrifice things that could never return them to their prior state.
Rojuro Ōtoribashi (Rose)
Loss and Legacy
Rojuro Ōtoribashi, or Rose for most, held the rank of captain of the 3rd Division and was exiled to the human world by Soul Society forhaving turned into a Visored. He went back home before the war and got back his title of captain, introducing into the house an offbeat style of combat based on rhythm, accompanied by some taste in music.
During the war, Rose was put through a series of choices that he had to make during his actions since his division was one of those hit by conflict considerably. His loyalty to Soul Society was as strong as ever, butthe Sternritter launched seriousand brutal attacks that turned into huge losses within his squad. The loss was weighing heavily on Rose as he tried to keep his morale up while dealing with his feelings of failure. Rose’s experience in the war underlines the mental burden that captains suffered when their squads were decimated, further solidifying how the war left deep scars in the hearts of even the most seasoned of warriors.
Yachiru Kusajishi
The Vanished Protector
Yachiru Kusajishi was vice-captain of the 11th Division andtook on a childlike persona, though she was great, warm friends with her captain, Kenpachi Zaraki. Pre-war, Yachiru came off as something of an enigma who was strangely strong, holding her own in fights despite such a playful nature.
We’ll get stronger, Ken-chan. Together, let’s get stronger. I know that Ken-chan is the best. So let’s get stronger! You and me together. -Yachiru Kusajishi
Yachiru proved crucial during several pivotal battles in theThousand-Year Blood War. As the war wore on, however, she disappeared into thin air, leaving Kenpachi fighting by himself with no direction. The disappearance of Yachiru and the revelations surrounding her true nature greatly impacted Kenpachi, and fans had been theorizing what had happened to her since she disappeared. It wasn’t until the tail-end of the war that Kenpachi truly felt her absence much more profoundly, since he had been using her existence for emotional support. The war experience ofYachiru indeed changed the dynamicsof the 11th Division and built layers around her character.
Kensei Muguruma
The Defeat that Haunts
Kensei Muguruma: The captain of the 9th Division,a Visored, and now a captainjust before the events of theThousand-Year Blood War. He is really hot-headed, serious to a fault, and has been holding on all this time in protection of his squad to restore his honor after being exiled.
However, the war also brought Kensei into multiple other situations wherein he had to confront the fact that his strength alone could never ensure victory. Despite all of his efforts, Kensei was defeated many times by the Sternritters with disastrous results. This weighed heavily upon him because he could only speculate and be aware of the limits of his power and protection for those working under him. Kensei’s war arc also shows how thedefeat of even the strongest of captainscan be thrown into a period of retrospection and growth.
Shuhei Hisagi
A New Sense of Responsibility
Shuhei Hisagi, lieutenant of the 9th Division, had always been a character who regarded his sense of duty and justice above everything. Before theThousand-Year Blood War, Hisagi was known for being extremely loyal to his captain and rising as a leader when his division needed him the most. However, he always felt plagued by self-doubt and never wished to bear a greater burden than he had.
The war also thrust Hisagi into the limelight, requiring him to take a more active part in theprotection of Soul Society. Growth for Hisagi during this war came in the form of his being much surer about his abilities and even trying to rise to the challenge when his captain was incapacitated. By the end of the war, Hisagi had matured so much that he was respected as an equal by his comrades and a core member of the Gotei 13. The war had transformed Hisagi from a reluctant lieutenant into an able leader.
