Summary

The new strategy gameAge Of Mythology: Retoldhas both fans ofAge Of Mythologyand newcomers flocking to try and put together armies based on mythological societies and different pantheons of Gods. But there are so many units, buildings and upgrades to keep track of that it can be a real challenge without some guidance on the best places to focus.

The Norse Civilization in particular has a lot to get used to; there are some major differences from other civilizations, particularly in terms of units. Withall the major changes from the originalAge of Mythology, even veteran players may be struggling to understand which Norse units are the most powerful.

Berserk Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

8Berserk

Strong Base Infantry

The Berserk is an important piece in the Norse Civilization inAge Of Mythology: Retold. Despite not being one of the strongest units, they are hugely important in the early game for a number of reasons. Unlike other civilizations where laborers/villagers gather resources and are in charge of building, infantry units such as the Berserk do the building for Norse players.

This makes it easier to construct forward bases without risking villagers, and Berserks will be able to defend themselves while doing so. They are also available from the Archaic Age and can counter cavalry to stop enemy scouts or fast-paced attacks early on, making them a key component in Norse Civilization players' early-game strategy. They can be even further improveddepending on which of the Norse Godsthe player is worshipping.

Throwing Axemen Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

7Throwing Axemen

Ranged Infantry Units

The Throwing Axeman is an unusual unit inAge Of Mythology Retoldfor a number of reasons. They are the only unit in the game that has a ranged attack but is counted as infantry, and their strength against other infantry is more significant than Berserks' counter-cavalry abilities.

They are also another infantry unit that can build for the player, making them a natural successor to the Berserk units as the game goes on. Their ranged attack has hack damage, which makes them perfect for defending a base, as they can damage enemy forces marching towards them, hit them through a wall, or take out siege weapons that are staying further back during an attack.

Valkyrie Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

6Valkyrie

Healing, Swift Myth Unit

Norse Myth Units are a diverse pack of fascinating creatures, but of the early-game options, none are more impressive across the board than Valkyries. These fast-paced creatures from Norse Mythology, which were also seen in the MCU, are female warriors riding on horses. They not only fight well against most units, but their special ability allows them to heal other friendly units at an excellent rate.

The Norse Civilization lacks many healing opportunities, making the Valkyries invaluable, especially against civilizations with lots of healers like the Egyptians. One or two of these units can keep pace with cavalry or go along with any Norse army and continually heal different units. In particular for other Norse myth units, Valkyries are an incredible piece of back-up, as units like Mountain Giants are hugely expensive to put together.

Jarl Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

5Jarl

Strong Against All Humans

Although they aren’t available very early in the game, Jarls are the best cavalry units available to the Norse Civilization. They are also powerful against a wide variety of units, since their strength is against any human unit. This includes the majority of units in the game, and they also come with high armor and health rating, a key unit to have against diverse enemies and at higher difficulties.

Although the Norse aren’t generally thought of as having strong cavalry, the Jarl, especially upgraded, is one of the best cavalry units inAge Of Mythology: Retold. Most shockingly of all, while Jarls are strong across the board against human units, they’re even better against myth units, with a big bonus that makes a group of them a destructive force. This is especially valuable considering the lack of speedy Norse heroes.

Hersir Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

4Hersir

The Standard Bearer

There aren’t manyhero units available to the Norse CivilizationinAge Of Mythology: Retold. However, the Hersir is a hero unit that can be generated in huge numbers. Not only this, but he is available from the Archaic Age, is especially strong against myth units but is good across the board, and like other Norse infantry units, he can build.

The Hersir is a vital part of any Norse army, serving as the main way for them to counter myth units, a way to send experienced warriors into dangerous areas to build a forward base, and the primary way that Norse players will be able to gather relics. Hersir heroes also generate favor through fighting and can randomly spawn myth units if they generate enough, which is a huge advantage in a civilization where gaining favor can be a challenge.

Fire Giant Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

3Fire Giant

Devastating Ranged Unit

TheNorse Civilization is lacking in strong archers, one of the main disadvantages they face. However, one of the Mythic Age myth units helps make up for this slightly, with Fire Giants being incredibly strong ranged units that also somewhat double as a siege weapon due to the intense crush damage they deal. This makes a Fire Giant a better siege option than any of the actual Norse siege weapons.

Fire Giants have a special ability that sees them throw out as many as six fireballs with one attack. Since each fireball can deal 30 hack damage and 10 crush damage, this makes the Fire Giant unit one of the most effective across the ranged board in the game.

Mountain Giant Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

2Mountain Giant

Engines Of Destruction

An even better (and likely the best) myth unit available to the Norse Civilization is the Mountain Giant. This creature is not only a devastating siege weapon with a special attack specifically for crushing buildings; he also has huge health to compensate for low armor and can fight and beat almost any unit in the game. That said, they are costly andrequires a build-up of resourcesto make many.

The Mountain Giant is the most effective creature that Norse players can gain access to easily, particularly since two different Gods at different ages provide access to him, making him one of the easiest myth units to pick up inAge Of Mythology: Retold. With multiple special attacks, easy access, and the ability to walk into an enemy base and destroy everything, the Mountain Giant is the complete picture of an ideal weapon of destruction.

Nidhogg Units In Age Of Mythology Retold

1Nidhogg

A Literal Dragon

Although there aren’t many flying units inAge Of Mythology: Retold, those that are available are especially dangerous and hard to prepare against. The Nidhogg is a huge flying beast that can breathe fire and tear down enemy armies or bases by itself. This creature’s only drawback is difficulty in gaining access to it, since it can’t be trained, only gifted by a God Powerafter worshipping the Minor God H’elin the Mythic Age.

However, withAge Of Mythology: Retoldmaking it possible to regain access to God Powers after using them once, the Nidhogg becomes an even more devastating beast. It can move quickly, isn’t hindered by walls, and can creep around to attack the most vital enemy locations in an instant, making it the most dangerous creature available to the Norse Civilization.
