Fans of Larian’s critically-acclaimedBaldur’s Gate 3have said that the game’s biggest mistake is making it so Minsc can’t be recruited until Act 3.Baldur’s Gate 3is widely considered to be one of the best video games ever made, but that doesn’t mean it’s without its critics. Even those that love the game have pointed out some flaws.
Minsc fans have complained that the fan favorite character can’t be recruited until Act 3, which means he has a greatly limited role inBaldur’s Gate 3compared to other characters. Most ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s other companionsare found in Act 1, though a couple can’t be recruited until Act 2. This was bad enough for fans of characters like Jaheira and Halsin, but restricting Minsc to Act 3 is even worse.
Baldur’s Gate 3fans continue to voice their disappointment that Minsc isn’t available until Act 3. The subject was recently brought back to the forefront by Reddit user AgitatedYoghurt3265, who said, “Minsc in Act 1 and Act 2 would be hilarious. Specially his dialogues with Minthara and Astarion,” and named the character only being in Act 3 as the game’s “biggest mistake.” Based on the reaction to the post, many fellowBaldur’s Gate 3fans agree that they wish Minsc appeared much earlier in the story. The post has over 2,600 upvotes at the time of this writing, with hundreds of comments. Many of the comments agree thatMinsc is underutilizedinBaldur’s Gate 3, though others feel as though he serves his purpose as a “guest character.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 Doesn’t Let You Recruit Minsc Until Act 3
There is some evidence to suggest that Minsc was originally going to be obtainable earlier inBaldur’s Gate 3. Replies to the post point out how unused dialogue suggests that there were even plans at one point to have Minsc as one ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s origin characters. Origin characters, for the uninitiated, are the game’s main companions, with players able to choose between one of them instead of making a custom character if they so desire.
For fans of Minsc, it’s unfortunate that his role is so small compared to all the otherBaldur’s Gate 3companions. Only being able to recruit him in Act 3 is a shame, but at least he’s included in the game at all. WithLarian moving on to other projects, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any Minsc-related DLC forBaldur’s Gate 3. WheneverBaldur’s Gate 4inevitably happens, it will be interesting to see if Minsc is given a bigger role that spans the entire game.
