Dumb Ways to Diestarted as a railway safety campaign video from Metro Tains Melbourne that went viral in late 2012. The immense success of the three-minute clip, which has over 315 million views as of September 2024, spawned a comprehensive media franchise revolving aroundbrutal cartoon deathsand catchy tunes. In October 2021, Metro sold the IP to PlaySide Studios, an Australian developer that was already makingDumb Ways to Diegames at the time.
New Dumb Ways to Die Game Coming in November 2024
The Melbourne-based company has just announced its newest project,Dumb Ways to Die: Free for All. The game will beexclusively available for Meta Quest headsets, thus marking the franchise’s first foray into virtual reality. PlaySide is describing it as a travel-themed collection of mini-games for between one and six players. Completing mini-games rewards players with coins that can be used to customize the look of their Beans. The game is scheduled for release on May 15, 2025, and can already be wishlisted on the Meta Quest Store.
Dumb Ways to Die: Free for All Isn’t Actually Free
Contrary to its name,Dumb Ways to Die: Free for Allwill not be a free-to-play title. Instead, PlaySide has attached a $19.99 price tag to it. This is a fairly average price for apremium Meta Quest game, many of which retail for up to $39.99 nowadays.Dumb Ways to Die: Free for Allshould still offer decent value for money, with PlaySide revealing that the initial version of the game will be packed with 50 mini-games. The developer is also planning to release two free DLCs in December and January, which will feature an extra 25 mini-games each. PlaySide hasn’t clarified whether it has any additional post-launch content plans for the upcoming game.
Free for Allwas announced mere months after the latestDumb Ways to Diegame hit the market. CalledDumb Ways to Survive, this spin-off debuted in early May 2024 as aNetflix Games exclusive. Much like its moniker implies,Dumb Ways to Surviveis a survival crafting experience that plays kind of likeDon’t Starve.
Although the virtual reality nature ofFree for Allmakes it unlikely that the game will ever reach non-VR systems, that doesn’t mean it will forever stay exclusive to the Meta Quest ecosystem. However, PlaySide hasn’t yet said anything to suggest that this newly announcedDumb Ways to Diegame is indeed only a timed Meta Quest exclusive.
Meta Quest 3
The Meta Quest 3 is the latest and greatest mixed-reality headset that brings a host of improvements compared to the previous generation. The Quest 3 has higher resolution displays per eye with support for 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates.It uses a more powerful 2nd generation Snapdragon XR2 processor that is capable of running games like Asgard’s Wrath 2 natively. It comes with a full-color passthrough, improved controllers, and a slimmer form factor.
