Summary

According to an interview withAMDsenior vice president Jack Huynh, the next iteration of the tech giant’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology, dubbed FSR4, may be fully powered by AI. Huynh stated thatAMDFSR4 is intended to improve performance and battery life on portable devices, despite being in development for nearly a year.

AMD FSR is a software-based solution that allows programmers and video game developers to render a game at a lower resolution, such as 720p, before upscaling to 1440p and above. WhileNvidia’s DLSS upscaling technologyrequires proprietary Tensor cores on supported hardware, AMD’s FSR can be activated by various graphics cards, consoles, and mobile devices on a game-by-game basis. AMD’s current version of its upscaling technology, FSR 3.1, is supported in PC titles such asBlack Myth: Wukong,God of War: Ragnarok, andWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Although AMD’s next iteration of FSR has no known release date, the tech giant is already making strides toward its launch. Inan interview with Tom’s Hardwareat IFA 2024, Huynh said AMD’s new FSR 4 would include AI-based frame generation, frame interpolation, and improved battery life in devices such asthe ROG Ally Xand the Lenovo Legion Go. Huynh said that FS4 has been in development since the latter half of 2023, and that the idea is to give players on the go more time with their favorite titles before recharging their devices. Since AMD has not released the API for FSR4 at the time of writing, it remains to be seen when the updated tech will reach the hands of developers. While it is not clear if AMD’s new FSR4 technology will be exclusive to handheld platforms or specific processors with integrated graphics, FSR3 currently supports graphics cards as far back as the Radeon RX 5000 series, Nvidia’s RTX 20 series, and the Intel Arc line.

AMD’s FSR4 May Integrate AI To Improve Performance

In addition to its work on FSR4,AMD recently released a Radeon Software preview driverthat enabled support for Fluid Motion Frames 2 on Ryzen AI 300 series processors to increase performance on supported notebook laptops. AMD stated that its Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology can double frame rates in supported titles such asCyberpunk 2077when rendered at 1080p.

Between Fluid Motion Frames 2and FSR4, AMD is looking to leverage AI to close the gap with Nvidia and Intel and bring efficient performance to games that support it. Only time will tell how PC gamers will utilize FSR4 once released.
