Mythology can be a rather dense topic. Many pantheons have hundreds, if not thousands of gods, goddesses, and heroes, and countless different readings and interpretations mean that there are no definitive right answers. It’s very easy to get lost in the weeds of mythology quite quickly, and that’s why most movies, TV shows, and video games tend toadapt one mythologyat a time. But that isn’t the case withAge of Mythology: Retold.

Age of Mythology: Retoldis home to over 50 gods and goddesses, taken from four different pantheons. When it comes toAge of Mythology: Retold’s Greek pantheon, they’re all pretty much household names that even those with just a passing interest in mythology would recognize. But the same can’t be said for some of theAge of Mythology’s other pantheons, with the Norse and Atlanteans letting players recruit a handful of lesser-known gods and goddesses.

The Most Obscure Norse Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold Explained

Forseti

A Norse god who’s only mentioned once or twice in ancient literature, Forseti is one of the more obscure members ofAge of Mythology: Retold’s roster. According to some interpretations, Forseti is the son of Baldur and Nanna, and he acts as a sort of god of judgment who settles disputes in his gilded hall. In the 8th-century textLife of St. Willibrord, it’s mentioned that there’s an island near Denmark named “Fositesland,” where a holy spring resides.Age of Mythologymay have taken inspiration from this story for its version of Forseti, as his in-game God Power lets players conjure up a powerful Healing Spring.

Njord

While his children,Freyr and Freya, are quite well known, Njord will be an obscure name to most who playAge of Mythology: Retold. Originally a member of the Vanir family of Norse gods, Njord joins the Aesir as a way to stop the war between the two families. Despite being a principal god in Norse mythology, Njord doesn’t appear in many tales.

Bragi

A cheerful god with a macabre role, Bragi was a bard who would welcome the recently deceased into the great halls of Valhalla. Some historians believe that Bragi was actually a real person at one time, and his poetry gained such fame that, upon his death, the Norse believed Odin appointed him personally to be Valhalla’s bard.

Ullr

Only available to those who ownAge of Mythology: Retold’s Freyr DLC, Ullr is widely believed to have been an important god in the Norse pantheon, but no one is really sure why. There are several mentions of Ullr leading the Norse pantheon in Odin’s absence, and there are multiple locations in Norway and Sweden that seem to be named after the mysterious god, but no one is certain of the god’s actual role. All that’s known is that Ullr was an excellent archer and skier, and possibly the son of Sif.
