Summary
The new massive strategy release,Age Of Mythology Retold, is an incredible remake of the belovedAge of Empiresspin-off that has reignited the passion of many fans over two decades after the original was released. The different civilizations in the game, each based on a different pantheon of Gods worshipped around the world, can take some getting used to.
Although veterans ofAge of Mythologyare flocking to the game alongside newcomers, everyone has something to learn, since there have beensome pretty significant changes inAge Of Mythology Retoldfrom the original. The Egyptian civilization is known for being the toughest to get to grips with in the original, so the various units can be a struggle to put a worth on from the get-go.
8Priests
Heroes & Healers
One of the disadvantages that the Egyptians have over other civilizations inAge Of Mythology Retoldis that their lack of hero units. With how prevalent myth units are in the game, heroes are necessary as they provide the only myth unit weakness. The Pharaoh unit respawns for Egyptian players throughout the game, but alone, he is not as strong as a small group of priests who can pull off victories against strong myth units, as well as heal other units.
Priests are also the scouts for the Egyptian civilization, and they can construct obelisks around the map to give constant oversight. They also have extra bonuses with Ra, who allows them to boost resource income and construction speed of buildings,or Set, who allows them to convert wild animalsto the player’s cause, creating whole armies. The vast abilities of priests, and the fact that they can be trained from the Archaic Age, makes them invaluable to Egyptian players.
7Roc
The Best Sneak Attack
There are various transport units inAge Of Mythology Retold, which, among their other capabilities, can hold other units inside them to be unleashed at a certain time. The Roc bird unit carries a cage which can be filled with up to fifteen land units. A Roc can fly into an enemy base, likely too fast to be taken down by towers, and drop an army on the other side to wreak havoc, all without having to march or break down enemy walls.
The Roc is a terrifying presence in the Egyptian pantheon, and on higher difficulties, can devastate a playerif their enemy uses it, even in campaign mode. Roc units are even harder to stop since they have divine immunity, meaning enemy God powers won’t work against them. Though a Roc itself cannot attack, their presence on the battlefield is one of the most terrifying sights in the game.
6Sphinx
The Best Early-Game Myth Unit
A classic Egyptian symbol, the Sphinx, is also a myth unit available inAge Of Mythology Retold, which understood the assignment in bringing these different mythologies to life. While there are a lot of myth units available to each civilization, and which ones players will want at any time depends upon their strategy, the Sphinx is a clear winner from among the other early game (Classical Age) Egyptian units, beating out the likes of the Anubite or the Wadjet in most categories.
The Sphinx is a relatively cheap option for a myth unit that moves fast and can cause serious damage to enemy units or buildings early in the game. While they are unlikely to be used as often late-game due to the presence of later-age myth units, the Sphinx should not be forgotten about as a hugely valuable part of early Egyptian armies.
5Chariot Archer
The Ultimate Speedy Archers
Another huge advantage that Egyptian units have inAge Of Mythology Retoldis speed. While the Greeks especially are known for many slow units, the Egyptians are quite the opposite. Chariot Archers are an amazing option for fast-paced archers with high attack that can get into an area, say where enemy villagers are gathering resources, kill the villagers and destroy storehouses, and get out before reinforcements arrive.
The Egyptian pantheon is built for these sorts of raids, and fortunately, the very Migdol Strongholds that train these units are also able to train the perfect complimentary units which can keep up with the chariot archers and protect them as well since these archers biggest weakness is their low health.
4Camel Rider
Perfect Sweeping Cavalry
The perfect complimentary force to Chariot Archers, the Camel Rider is a speedy cavalry unit trained from the Migdol Stronghold which can keep the speedy pace of a fast-striking army, and which is strong against most of the units which Chariot Archers are weak against.
Best of all, Camel Riders are especially strong against other types of cavalry, which means the only units fast enough to stop a force of Camel Riders and Chariot Archers will be easily dispatched by those same units. This combination is one of the deadliest ways to get ahead in the mid-game with the Egyptian Civilization inAge Of Mythology Retold. Camel Riders' biggest weakness is against infantry, which is the biggest strength of Chariot Archers, making them arguably the best team of units in the game.
3Avenger
The Best Egyptian Myth Unit
Though all Egyptian myth units, whichever of the Egyptian Gods players choose to follow, are great in the late game, the Avenger is on another level. This imposing figure, human in stature but with the head of a falcon, is devastating against groups of soldiers, particularly in close quarters. Paired with the God Power achieved by following Horus, namely the Tornado, players will be able to sweep aside enemies, causing chaos and then sending in Avengers to clean up what remains.
The special whirling attack of Avenger units allows them to do big damage immediately to any enemy units nearby, producing one of the better AOE attacks inAge Of Mythology Retold. The Avenger has proven over a number of different scenarios to beat out the likes of the Mummy or Phoenix as the very top Egyptian myth unit, making it well worth adding to any Egyptian arsenal.
2Son Of Osiris
Devastating God Power
Though not a traditional Egyptian Civilization unit inAge Of Mythology Retold, the Son of Osiris must be mentioned as he is worth choosing an entire Minor God to worship at the Mythic Age just to get. The God Power for following Osiris in the Mythic Age is the ability to transform the player’s Pharaoh unit into the Son of Osiris, a demigod hero unit with incredible power.
The Son of Osiris can send bolts of electricity through multiple enemy units, devastating armies, and proving to be by far the best hero unit available to the Egyptian Civilization. In a situation where enemies are focusing a great deal on myth unit production, players will need the Son of Osiris. With the new updates inAge Of Mythology Retold, it is even possible to use the power again if the Son of Osiris perishes, making him and his power even more valuable.
1War Elephant
The Ultimate Egyptian Force Of Destruction
Many players that take on the Egyptian Civilization will do so with the ultimate goal of war elephants in mind. These creatures, trained from the Heroic Age, will devastate enemy units, and are the ultimate late-game tool for Egyptian players in most cases. The huge bonus against buildings, the high bar of health and the upgrades which can train them incredibly fast and buff their attack and health even further make them unquestionably the best unit on the Egyptian side.
War Elephants are cavalry units, but they might as well be considered siege units because with them, the other siege weapons available to the Egyptians become much less frequently used. War Elephant armies are game-enders and players will go to great lengths, focusing on raiding parties of Camelry and Chariot Archers early to hold their opponents back, all so they can send in a full army of War Elephants laterwhen they have built up enough resources.
