Age of Mythology Retoldhas been released worldwide, and though it has been twenty years since the original was released, plenty of long-time fans of theAge of Empiresspin-off have flocked back to have a go on the new version of the game, which has updated more than just strategic and graphic elements, the entire game has shifted in an attempt to balance it more than the original managed to do.
However, with so many veterans itching to jump into the quickly popular multiplayer mode, many new players who never touched the original will be struggling to choose a God to worship; the most important choice at the beginning of any game, and one that haschanged in many ways from the original. While all Gods are viable at the start of a game and have their own advantages, there are some that beginners will have an easier time getting to grips with than others.
7Set
Strong Early And Late Game
While theEgyptian Gods aren’t the easiest to get to grips withfor beginners inAge of Mythology Retold, Set comes with a particular set of advantages that make it worthwhile worshipping him. There are some Gods with more advantage in the early game and some in the late game, which requires careful balancing to handle the strategy for them. Set is the perfect in-between.
A special ability of Set’s allows players to take control of wild animals which can fight for the player, but aren’t counted as myth units, meaning they aren’t weak against heroes like other creatures. This allows players to build an early army for defense or offense. Later in the game, Set comes with the God Thoth as a minor option for the Mythic Age, including the devastating meteor ability as well as the Valley of the Kings upgrade, which allows players to train war elephants faster, an upgrade known for frequently being the difference maker in multiplayer games. The multiplayer mode inAge of Mythology Retoldcould also be a game-changer for other strategy games.
6Zeus
The Simple Learning Option
While Zeus is a strong God in general, he wouldn’t be considered one of the very top options under the currentAge of Mythology Retoldmeta. However, this doesn’t stop him from being a great option for beginners. The Greek Gods and troops are the ones players begin with in theAge of Mythologycampaign, and they are the easiest to learn. With simple different buildings for different types of units and the simple ways to gain favor and build defenses, the Greek armies are a great way to start.
Additionally, Zeus himself comes with big boosts to favor, starting with some, having a higher max, and collecting it faster, enabling players to build more myth units. Infantry units do more damage to buildings andthe unique infantry unit Myrmidonignores enemy armor, making a simple focus on myth units and infantry an easy path to doing huge damage against enemies with Zeus.
5Hades
Hellish Assistance
Hades is another of the Greek God pantheon, and he is arguably the best God for defense in the entirety ofAge of Mythology Retold. Players will find that his archers, already strong with the Greeks in general, will be devastatingly powerful, and his upgrades to building strength mean that new players will be able to hold their position with greater ease while learning other parts of the game.
Hades’ initial god power also helps players defensively by strengthening their most vital town center, and his deathly tricks allow dead soldiers to have a chance of returning as shades, a great example ofhow muchAge of Mythology Retoldembraces its theme. This importantly means if players attack an enemy and fail, they will have strong buildings and an army of shades ready to help defend against any counterattack while they rebuild.
4Kronos
The Most Deadly Titan
The Atlantean God pantheon is actually made up of Titans, and Kronos, the leader of the Titans, is a great choice for players trying to get used to the complicated style of Atlantean army play. When players advance with any God, they get a free myth unit, but with Kronos, they get two free myth units, quickly building up a devastating army of creatures.
Kronos also helps players gain population faster by giving manor-building boosts in speed, and he gives big buffs to siege weapons as well. If players love the idea of being able to march suddenly into an enemy base and do big damage quickly, his Deconstruction god power mixed with strong siege units and plenty of myth units will make for a huge advantage.
3Loki
Deadly Minor Gods
All Gods inAge of Mythology Retoldcome with different minor god options as the player advances through the game. Loki has arguably the best set of choices in the Norse Pantheon, maybe even the whole game, being the only God outside the new DLC choice Freyr who has access to H’el, the Goddess whose power is the free appearance of the devastating Nidhogg dragon unit.
Loki focuses on Hersir units, infantry heroes who can be devastating against myth units in particular, and they can randomly conjure myth units during battle due to gaining their own favor. Loki’s strength across god choices, myth units, and Hersir heroes makes him a great choice for beginners who can stumble into stronger units and are less likely to make a bad minor God choice due to all Loki’s selections being fairly strong.
2Poseidon
Huge Cavalry Advantages
Arguablythe best of the Greek Gods for beginnersto take on, Poseidon is great for a number of reasons. He is the God that Arkantos and his Atlantean compatriots usually support in the early parts of the main campaign, giving newcomers a lot of experience worshipping this God off the bat. He also gives huge cavalry upgrades, improving their line of sight and giving a regenerating water scout in the Hippocampus, which allows beginners to scout out unfamiliar maps early on.
Poseidon also makes defensive strategy a little easier, as Militia units will spawn from destroyed player buildings, which gives a boost to players trying to rush a defensive army together before their entire base is razed. Poseidon also has boosts for Market buildings, which have become more important and relevant earlier in the game due to players being able to build and use them as early as the Classical Age.
1Odin
Gives Huge Fighting Advantages
The Norse Civilization inAge of Mythology Retoldis the one which struggles the most with favor since it is generated through fighting. This makes it hard for unsure beginners to gain it early, but Odin gives a 25% bonus to how much is generated and has huge advantages for many of the fighting units available to the Norse Civilization later in the game.
Additionally, Odin gives the player regenerating ravens from the first time they build a temple, which can scout over the air and show beginner players the entire map very quickly, which can be helpful infinding and gathering resources quickly. This is invaluable to players finding their feet, and the regeneration rate for health that Odin gives to human and hero units is also an invaluable commodity for newcomers defending a lot early in games.
