Summary
2025 is shaping up to be a huge year forMinecraft, with the game’s 15th anniversary setting up a slew of big projects. Between a new update structure, an upcoming show, and a major movie,Minecraftfans have a lot to look forward to.
After struggling through a rocky period in fanbase relations last year,Minecraftdelivered two fantastic updates in 2024—putting the game back on course. With that considered, the sandbox smash hit has had a pretty stellar 15th anniversary, taking on fan feedback to forge a new and exciting path for the title. Though the year has had its sore spots, such asMinecraft Legendsshutting down after just a year, content for the main game has scarcely been stronger.
2025 Will See Minecraft Venture Into New Media And Reinvent Its Update Wheel
A recent article from Mojanghas made it clear that 2025 and onwards will be a very different time forMinecraft. The post lays out all the many ways in which the vanilla game will be changing, as well as how community interaction is being approached differently. Moreover, a number of teasers have been released throughout 2024, pointing towards a multimedia future that goes beyondMinecraft’s ubiquity. All told, the biggest game in the world will reach even greater heights next year.
A Minecraft Movie And Mojang’s Netflix Venture
A Minecraft Moviehas long been whispered about, with the original announcement dating as far back as 2014. To some degree, the film’s recent teaser reflects that time period; though stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa are reaching far greater peaks now than then, the teaser’s animation is very reminiscent of yesteryear’s adaptation sensibilities. Hybrid adaptations, those that involve mixing animated and live-action worlds, were a staple of 2010s adaptations likeWarcraftandDetective Pikachu. On the other hand, more recent attempts (such as 2023’sMarioandFive Nights at Freddy’smovies) keep the mediums separate.
Though fans are broadly skepticalaboutA Minecraft Movie(and not without good reason, considering its dated dressing), there’s a decent amount of excitement for the game’s upcoming animated show. Back in May, Mojang revealed that it would be teaming up with Netflix to create aMinecraftanimated series. Details about the series are scarce, with not even a release date currently available, but it has been confirmed that the show will follow a wholly original plot. Many unofficialMinecraftanimated shows have already been created, thanks in no small part to how intertwined the game is with YouTube, but a high-budget Netflix show has the chance to create something of even greater scope.
A New Approach To Updates And Community Participation
According to Mojang’saforementioned article onMinecraft’s future, the much-derided Mob Vote is getting the axe. In its stead, two annual Minecraft Live events will take place going forward, one for either end of the year, serving as new hubs for community interaction with a renewed level of focus. The Mob Vote has provided some laughs and decent mobs over the years, but it’s also lit the fires of at least 2 community fallouts—not to mention how flawed its format is at adequately taking on fan input.
To better incorporate feedback, Mojang will be doing more than just additional live events. Rather than one big annual update,Minecraftwill see multiple small updatesover the year. Updates like Buzzy Bees and Armored Paws have already demonstrated how great small updates are for bringing on community feedback, with their focused pool of only a few features easier to trial and modify. It also leads to more complex systems, with small drops better equipped for refinement.
